A Newbie's View On Psych!

Postby Two Sides on Fri Dec 10, 2010 1:27 am

Hey :D

So, I purchased Season 1 on DVD months ago hoping to catch up but I never really got around to doing it! Anyway, after all the love I have seen for Psych, throughout the forum, I decided i'd start watching! Iceman came up with the idea that I let y'all in on my thoughts on each episode, you know, for a newbies view on things. I'll try and do an episode or two a night, i'm new to this sorta thing  Anyway, here it goes...

Pilot

First impressions... it was great!! And it has the addictive feel to it! The dad seemes a bit of a douche, even more so as the episode went on but not the kind of character I don't like, he was just a bit harsh i feel. I'm already liking the main character, Shawn. He was pretty much funny as soon as it started! I loved how he had the girl on his lap (and face), yet he decided to phone the police too solve a crime. And then there was the handcuff thing once he put the phone down  I get a Sawyer (Lost) vibe from him a little. He is sarcastic, cocky and seemingly always looking for money. And i also love how he tried to get out of that crime...It's alright to steal a car to impress a girl?

The way that police bloke stopped chewing when Shawn said the two detectives were sleeping together was priceless! He has a face like a slapped arse throughout though :| Other moments: Also loved how Shawn pretended to have a vision and snapped his shades from his face  Cheesy much? And how Gus got in the car staring at Shawn( LOL) when they were leaving the families house for the first time, sooo funny! He could tell millions of stories with the stares he pulls off!! Another thing I LOVED was how Gus ran out from the crime scene screaming, hilarious!!

There were quite a few lines which I found hilarious as well!

"Don't you try and trivialise police work!"
"I guess i was doing what you were doing, not solving crime"
"What you're a psychic now too?", "You're not a psychic!" lol
The sketch scene was really funny!! "Bill, i'm thinking... multiple women" lol.
"Maybe you should date him to" "Maybe i will"
"Gus, that's horrible. It doesn't convey surprise, at all!"
"What do you see, detective!" That was when they were in the trees and they spot the dog   His face and expression was genius.
"I used to work in a candy store, and it was NOTHING like this"
"You locked the car!?!" "IT'S A BAD NEIGHBOURHOOD!!!"

I enjoyed it very much near the end when he outed the dad. Altogether what i appreciate the most is that there are NO hateable characters!!

And it incorporates all of that, and still makes a good detective show! It had me thinking, which to be honest, i wasn't expecting. I think it's cleverly done, the way Shwan's observations come together to create some emphatic crime  It's genius in a way that there is such a good balance within the show (or Pilot episode at least). It had the right amount of everything! Definitely going to continue watching!

1 :D
7
6
2

and 1 :|

Not a bad rating ;)

The dad gets better. They just want to emphasize what a strained relationship they have, and how Shawn despises being anything like his father.

Hate to tell you but:

Spoiler (Click to reveal/hide)
The blonde lady in the pilot is not in anymore episodes. A new character comes in, in episode 2.

So glad you liked it! Btw, James Roday (Shawn) completely improvised the pineapple scene ("Should we slice this up for the road?") because of that, there is now a pineapple, or a reference to a pineapple in every Psych episode to date.

Keep posting, that was a great read!

I give everything a second chance, I have only seen random episodes of this and didn't like it that much.
However, I done the same with How I Met Your Mother and now I love it, so - I am downloading the pilot episode right now, get excited... or nervous Iceman!

Thanks Iceman :D I did notice the pineapple, I never really knew how it was relevent. All i knew was it's close to the heart of many fans  thanks, for letting me in on the meaning behind it :D
I'm glad to know the Dad improves... He didn't seem too bad, considering he helped Shawn out at the station. But what you said makes a lot of sense... about portraying the relationship between the two, so i'll let him off :P

And what do you mean the blonde lady is not in it! :O It's a travesty tbqh :( And i just found out she was the one in White Chicks! I didn't realise!

Final word, James Roday? is a great actor

But yeah, really enjoyed it!! Season 2 already on my Christmas list

Some episodes of season 3 are very weak. So maybe that is what you saw.

The pilot, is very good. If you like the pilot, you will most likely enjoy the show as a whole.

She was in "House" too, and now "Covert Affairs". Thats ok, the new lady is called Juliet, and she's much better imo!

And yes, Roday is fantastic. He can do drama and comedy.

Dule Hill is too. You mentioned it in your first post. He can say more with one look than someone else can with an entire page of dialogue.

Shawn reminds me of Ace Ventura.

More than anything, it was funny, I think the acting overall was cheesy (Shawn & Gus) or poor, especially the guilty murdering dad, however, I can see the acting improving through time.

It was a good episode, I will keep watching in hope that it gets better, but it was enjoyable.

The acting itself, gets better, but it does stay cheesy, it's like a real life Scooby Doo :P

DA, you can't complain about cheesiness and have Scrubs as your favourite show, it doesn't work like that! :PP I love the cheesiness. Normally, the comedy that makes me cringe a little is the best :)

Scrubs humour is silly/zaney and on different occasions smart - and the acting is great, there is a huge difference.
Psychs ACTING was cheesy or poor, the humour was good, quite silly as well - but most humour is.
There is a huge gap between silly and cheesy.

Episode 2

Spellingg Bee

Impressions... The dad's an official douche. Oh no! He's alright, helping with the dog house :D (Clearly wrote that whilst viewing :P ) The story itself was great! But the comedy kind of pulls me away from it slightly... which is nothing for me to complain about! I love it! Like I said after watching the pilot, it's seems so balanced. The characters are awesome, the storylines are awesome and then there's a great level of humour.

Favourite Scenes
The first scene was great! They (Shawna and Juliet?) matched up perfectly, in a funny way!! They both were quite cocky and sharp with each other (in a good way obvs). Great chemistry! I already like Juliet :D She totally owns him in that scene! And she's not bad looking each
The second scene was also pretty awesome, with Gus and Shawn in the apartment. The chemistry between the two of them shone through more then it did at any point in the pilot. So that was great. It got better as the episode went on to be fair. Shawn was so out of place at the spelling bee to begin with, it was hilarious all the way through  When he was reading the grocery list to the contestants - Amazing. The whole banana thing was ridiculous. Also liked when Shawn broke the case to all the police and exposed the Dad and the kid, that was a good scene... not fully liking the over dramatisation Shawn puts on when pretending to have a vision or whatever it is he pretends to have!

And before I forget, the moment Shawn was trying to get past the Policeman who was requesting a badge? The whole throwing himself around the place was
SHAWN: Well, considering he might have just been murdered, that's…that's definitely a negative...
*Brief silence*
SHAWN: HAHAHAHA
GUS and POLICEMAN:... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Favourite Lines
"Dude, is that Korean porn?"
"Boohoo for voo"
"How come i can't get you this excited about girls!! Or Mexico!!"
"Oh... Did i just say all of that, out loud?"
"I'm so sorry if my agonizing pain is inconveniencing you"
"GIVE ME A WORD so we can get out here" And then Gus just stares LOL priceless. I love Gus.

And i love the theme song!! I may download it :) Much like I said yesterday, it's really addictive. The characters are likeable and warm. The overall set up is a friendly one. Light humour and good plots!

I am watching episode 6 right now, it's a decent show. :)

Episode 5 is probably my favourite so far, the humour is usually really good.
Only from Shawn though - the dad is easily the best actor in the program though.
On the actors note, the really need to step up their game with their guest stars, most of them are horrible.

I agree with Jack, though. Theme tune is fantastic, really catchy, I am sure I have heard it somewhere before. :)

So, is Shawn and Juliet going to get it on at any point?

No one answer that. :P

-- Merged Double Post --

Episode 3

"Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Piece"

Impressions... Again! The dad, another Lost comparison... He reminds me of Christian Shephard in a way that he tries to push the kid into being perfect, making the relatiohsip an uncormfortable one at best. I ship, yes i ship, Shawn and Juliet :D They should just get together... during the palm reading scene.. i was quite woozy.

Favourite Scenes
See the later quote regarding bible throwing haha. Then there was the scene with the maid of honour at the start, that was hilarious, mainly for the line i quote later! Shawn laughing in the vent at the detective  . Loved the scuffle in the kitchen  Bless them, they hate each other so much! It was so funny when they were all in the church and he has one of his vision things and his finger shakes  it was so random.

Favourite Lines
"You should see my closet" "I am hoping to" LOL
"Clairfy hostile" "Use my tone now as a guide"
"Let me read your palm" "How about just one finger"  She's fiesty :| I like that.
"You have magic hands... which i was really looking forward to on Friday"

And my favourite exchange so far:
"If this is some sory of hazing ritual, where we're gonna end up naked in a river somewhere, I'll need to arange for a ride home."
"Listen to me, Spencer. The department's reputation is on the line with this one. If I cath you anywhere near this care, I will throw every book I can find at you."
"What if you find the Bible? You going to throw that too? Seems a little sacrilegious to me, don't you think?"
And the detective walks away with a clenched fist LOL

Don't get me wrong now, i liked the episode a lot... but it's the least best yet :PP The Pilot episode was the best, then obviously Spellingg Bee. :)

Good episode! I could have probably offered a little more of an insight but i'm tired. :(

-- Merged Double Post --

Episode 4

"Woman Seeking Dead Husband: Smokers Okay, No Pets"

Impressions... I really liked Juliet this episode, especially when it came to Shawn and Gus needing the case file  and she plainly refused them. Shawn is so innappropriate in the methods he uses! Which i guess i part the reason the humour is so good... I mean seriously, a Seance? The case this episode wasn't the storngest of the 4 for me, but it had its moments like the 'how many fingers' part.

Favourite Scenes
Carlton and Juliets faces as Shawn was meeting that woman (first ever client!) for the first time was a picture moment  Thye just know Shawn talks complete ****!. Oh and then there was the "Eyes of a serpent, ears of a bat..." moment! I LOVED IT, soo unbelievably ridiculous!! The car scene where they were following the convicts, and then debating about the authorization of the 'steak out", was funny. Great how Juliet and Carlton were calling each other out, so to speak, and then Shawn pops up in the back and trumps Carlton with the "Technically... 23.40 only applies in federal cases" My favourite part was when the bloke, the convict, with the gun moved away from the TV so Shawn had no way of seeing  and was then in front of Gus holding up 3 fingers! Gus' face was comedy gold!!

Favourite Lines
"Gus i'm not a mind reader", "No that's just what you try to tell everyone"
"Stop saying bingo, you know how i hate that!" "Fine... Yahtzee?"
"You've broken a chain or spirtual trust!"

Gus: He does have nice hair...
Shawn: Yeah... that takes a lot of up-keep though, man.
Gus: Yeah...
Shawn: You gotta worry about split ends...
Gus: Dandruff.
Shawn: Dandruff.
Gus: It's horrible.
Shawn: It's awful.

I think i need to start trying to write more on the actual cases themselves though :hmm:

Haha, love your comments.

I think you can see what I meant by Dule's facial expressions. He doesnt need to say anything and he steals the entire scene.

For both of you: As far as the theme goes, it is written and sung by the executive producer Steve Franks, (who wrote Big Daddy) and his band "The Friendly Indians".

There are some variations of the theme song, that will come up in other episodes. But here is the original: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ngyueg

Anyway, Im soooo glad you guys are liking the show!
