Top 30 Lost Quotes - #1 Posted

Postby Elge on Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:53 pm

Hello, everyone! I've been lurking these boards for quite a few months now, but haven't posted that much. However, I figured I'd get in on the fun of all these creative and interesting lists and make one of my own. To me, one of the best things about Lost has always been the dialogue. The most intense scenes, I believe, are not when the A-Team is trekking through the jungle, or there's a massive firefight; rather, to me, the most intense scenes are the ones filled with tons of quotable dialogue and amazing performances. Scenes especially between the brilliant Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson are some of the greatest moments in the series. So, therefore, in this particular list, I thought I'd count down my top 30 favorite single-character quotes of Lost. Now, as stated, these will be single-quotes; they may appear during conversations, but they will be lines of dialogue from one person. In the tradition of many other lists here, I will also count down what I believe to be the five worst quotes in the series, and I will start on number five very shortly. Until then, however, I'll leave you with some interesting bit of trivia pertaining to my list:

- John Locke is the most featured person on the list, with five quotes in total (Sawyer is second with four, and Charlie third with three).
- Ben has as many quotes listed as Sawyer - well...technically.
- I may anger many of you with one of my "worst quotes."
- Kate, Boone, Claire, Walt, Sun and Jin - all Season 1 regular cast members - do not have a single quote on this list.
- There are 20 different characters featured on this list: 12 of the characters are dead, four of the characters are "unknown," and four other characters are alive.

And with that, I'll leave this thread to germinate for a bit while people become aware of it, and in a few hours, I'll begin by posting the 5th Worst Lost Quote.

P.S. Like other lists, I will also be keeping score of people who attempt to guess what the next quote will be, and will even provide hints to help aid in those guesses. Each person will be allowed a total of three guesses (until we get to the top ten, in which only one guess per person).

20. “Okay. See, we did crash, but it was on this crazy island. And we waited for rescue, and there wasn't any rescue. And there was a smoke monster, and then there were other people on the island. We called them the Others, and they started attacking us. And we found some hatches, and there was a button you had to push every 108 minutes or... well, I was never really clear on that. But... the Others didn't have anything to do with the hatches. That was the DHARMA Initiative. The Others killed them, and now they're trying to kill us. And then we teamed up with the Others because some worse people were coming on a freighter. Desmond's girlfriend's father sent them to kill us. So we stole their helicopter and we flew it to their freighter, but it blew up. And we couldn't go back to the island because it disappeared, so then we crashed into the ocean, and we floated there for a while until a boat came and picked us up. And by then, there were six of us. That part was true. But the rest of the people... who were on the plane? They're still on that island.” - Hugo “Hurley” Reis, The Lie
19. “If you do not stop following me, I will kill one of them. Do you understand?” - Ethan Rom, All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues
18. “Yes, I am ready. I ask for no forgiveness, Father, for I have not sinned. I have only done what I needed to do to survive. A small boy once asked me if I was a bad man. If I could answer him now, I would tell him that when I was a young boy, I killed a man to save my brother's life. I am not sorry for this. I am proud of this. I did not ask for the life I was given, but it was given nonetheless, and with it, I did my best...” - Mr. Eko, The Cost of Living
17. “Every single second of my pathetic little life is as useless as that button!” - John Locke, ?
16. ”NOT PENNYS BOAT.” - Charlie Pace, Through The Looking Glass
15. "No John, unfortunately we don't have a code for ‘there is a man in my closet holding a gun to my daughter's head.’ Although we obviously should." - Benjamin Linus, The Man From Tallahassee
14. “That’s why the Red Sox will never win the damn Series.” - Christian Shephard, Outlaws
13. “They've attacked us, sabotaged us, abducted us, murdered us... We're not the only people on this island and we all know it!” - John Locke, …In Translation
12. “Course if I was one of them - these people that you seem to think are your enemies - what would I do? Well, there'd be no balloon. So I'd draw a map to a real secluded place, like a cave or some underbrush, good place for a trap. An ambush. And when your friends got there, a bunch of my people would be waiting for them. Then they'd use them to trade for me. I guess it's a good thing I'm not one of them huh? - You guys got any milk?” - “Henry Gale,” The Whole Truth
11. “We have to go back!” - Jack Shephard, Through The Looking Glass
10. "There's a new sheriff in town, boys. Y'all best get used to it." - James "Sawyer" Ford, The Long Con

8. “It's been six days, and we're all still waiting. Waiting for someone to come. But what if they don't? We have to stop waiting. We need to start figuring things out. A woman died this morning just going for a swim. He tried to save her and now you're about to crucify him. We can't do this. Every man for himself is not going to work. It's time to start organizing. We need to figure out how we're going to survive here. Now I found water. Freshwater, up in the valley. I'll take a party up there at first daylight. If you don't want to come then find another way to contribute! Last week most of us were strangers. But we're all here now. And God knows how long we're going to be here. But if we can't live together—we're gonna die alone.” - Jack Shephard, White Rabbit
7. "Let me ask you something. How long you been here on the island? Oh, fifty days. That's, what, almost two whole months? Tell me, you go over to a man's house for the first time... Do you take off your shoes? Do you put your feet up on his coffee table? You walk into the kitchen and eat food that doesn't belong to you? Open the door to rooms you got no business opening? You know somebody a whole lot smarter than anybody here once said: 'Since the dawn of our species, man's been blessed with curiosity.' You know the other one about curiosity, don't you, Jack? 1. “Do you really think all this is an accident -- that we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence -- especially, this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.” - John Locke, Exodus Part Two

One of your worst will be a shocker, eh? "We have to go back"? "Don't tell me what I can't do"?

Locke's "we're not the only ones on this Island and we all know it" speech FTW. Along with Ben's milk comment.

Good idea for a countdown.

Thanks to Magic Box For the Sig

John Locke was the hero the Island deserved, but not the one it needed. He's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A dark knight.

OK, I hope "we have to go back" is the one you think will anger people. Personally i've never been too fond of that one myself. :PP

My guess for this:

"Let me begin with the first hint for the fifth worst quote: Both characters that say this quote are connected to time travel in some way."

Is my signature. I hope i'm wrong, it happens to be one on my top 5 quotes.

I disagree it's one of the worst, but based on that hint, I'm going to go with "Whatever Happened, Happened."

No one got this; however, some quotes mentioned already are featured somewhere down on both the top 5 worst list and the top 30 best list. The first one is always the most difficult to guess, though, and perhaps my hint was a little too vague. Oh well, here's to #5.

#5 Worst Quote: “God help us all.” - Eloise Hawking, The Lie

Image

The 5th worst Lost quote according to me is not an awkwardly-written line of a dialogue, or one that had become so painfully overacted in the show it required effort to not mute the TV every time it was spoken. Rather, it’s a simple phrase first spoken by Pierre Chang in the Season Five premier, but recognized more for its use when spoken by Eloise Hawking to Benjamin Linus in the Season Five episode The Lie. The reason it’s on this list is because it’s one of those lines that’s frequently overused in works of fiction; it’s something that has really lost all sense of context and meaning, and only feels like a forced way to turn a situation into something dire. What makes the line even more terrible coming from a character like Eloise Hawking, is the simple fact that she - like her son - embodies the elements of time travel and course correction in the show, and along with Desmond and Daniel, form a sort’ve “trinity” of characters that revolve around that particular arc. So to hear someone like her, who believes you cannot change fate, speak of God trying to “help” only makes the line sound more contrived and unnecessary.

Hint for #4: Don't get mad at me for including this as a worst quote. Get mad at destiny.

I was thinking about doing this one after I finished the one I've got in the character section. :PP Haha.

I'm going with "Destiny is a fickle bitch." I like the quote... but I also don't like it all that much. :S

Or something like that.

My favorite quote, by far, is from Ben, in The Man from Tallahasee: What if I told you that, somewhere on this island, there is a very large box and whatever you imagined, whatever you wanted to be in it when you opened that box, there it would be? What would you say about that, John?

I'll just say it was a very difficult time narrowing this down to a Top 30 best list. There're just so many amazing quotes in the show, and a bunch of which I had to exclude from the list because of space. I'm sure I could've made a Top 100 countdown, but I think my head would've exploded from trying to remember them all and/or look them up.
