LOST Prop Cup 2009 - Discussion thread

Postby Dharmageddon on Mon Nov 02, 2009 1:46 am

It's that time of year again. We're deep into the hiatus, the episode and character cups have passed us by, and we're left feeling a little bit lonely, and perhaps a little bit cold...

Back to help us through the last remaining stretch of the hiatus comes the Prop Cup, 2009 edition. For those of you that enjoy the Prop Cup and wish to partake in related discussion, we're setting up this thread as a base. Day by day, starting tomorrow, we'll be posting up the polls on the DarkUFO blog site. You're welcome to comment there on the blog, or to discuss your thoughts here.

This thread will be linked to in each of the blog poll posts.

I thought I'd share a few clues as to which props will appear in tomorrow's polls. There will be two polls, each consisting of six props. See if you can guess them.

The first poll contains a blinding work of art, a joyride, a "disquieting" landmark, yellow love, a white box, and a rather charming attire.

The second poll brings us a get-together, a tragic trigger, a revealing flame, two very daunting words, one of Ben's many secrets, and an object that we've witnessed as fully functional, semi-functional, non-functional, and as a shell.

The Blast Door Map, Hurley's DHARMA van, the 4 toed statue, Hurley's I Heart Tzi-shus t-shirt, ???, ???

So... I guess we're not having a bracket this time ?

I'd guess that the tragic trigger might be the gun that Michael shot Ana and Libby with. the last one could be the Swan.

Good guesses, but a few were slightly out. And no, no bracket for the Prop Cup. We opt in favour of being able to include a higher quantity of props, as well as keeping lists a mystery (which voters have enjoyed in the past).

Matches 1 & 2 are now up, and can be found at the blog -

I voted for the Dharma Van and the Four Toed Statue. I do think that the statue is probably Season 5's defining piece, and I also think that it stands a good chance this year. In previous cups, the statue was merely a peculiar ruin, but now we know it to be the centrepiece to perhaps LOST's biggest mystery; Jacob. Not to mention, we've now seen the statue in all of its towering glory.

Do you think that the introduction of Radzinsky has dampened the Blast Map's chances this year? As cool as the map was, has the mystery surrounding the map fizzled? Or do you still consider it amongst the greatest of pieces?

I also voted for the print-out, ancient door and Nigerian plane. All three I feel deserve to proceed through to round 2. Alas, only two can.

I voted for the blast door map and the four toed statue in the first poll. The blast door map is as iconic as it gets to Lost's mythology if you ask me. Remember how many people were freakin out when they saw the map? You could be right though about introducing Radzinsky sort of taking away from the mystery of it all. I have always thought that the person that made that map was sort of a dharma outsider that was planning some sort of uprising. Now, after season five we know that it was a guy that was actually pretty high up in the DI that knew a lot. Now, how he got stuck in the Swan pushing the button and why he eventually killed himself.....that's still a mystery.

I also voted for the system failure printout and the Nigerian plane. I always loved the beechcraft that brought Yemi. It was a big part of the latter half of season one and season two for me.

For the sake of keeping my choices to a minimum, I only chose The Hatch Door from the first group of Match 7. It's got to be one of the most iconic images of the entire series, right when LOST was in its heyday (the peak of its viewership).
Also, the knife used to kill Jacob. It (and Ben) are responsible for setting in motion a death that has huge implications.
Cloth Picture of the Statue. It is part of Jacob's tapestry, and that tapestry is central to the larger plan that Jacob (and TPTB) have in mind.
And Locke's compass. Put there on purpose by TPTB to represent a time paradox (with no answer), it helps us to see that while they are showing us this paradox, they mean to avoid exactly as such with other objects, namely, our Losties. :)

I compiled a small list of the props proceeding through to Round 2 so far:

Radzinsky's Blast Door Map, Four Toed Statue, Ancient Hieroglyphic Door, Yellow Nigerian Plane, Ajira Plane, the Cabin Chair, Frozen Donkey Wheel, Submarine, Charlie's FATE, Apollo Chocolate Bar, the Black Rock, Swan Station Computer Terminal, Desmond's Hazmat Suit, the Hatch Door, the Sonic Fence, Locke's Compass, Danielle's Map of Island, Ben's Ninja Baton, Sawyer's Letter, Locke's Drawing of Monster, Locke's Orange Peel, the Mural of Smokey & Anubis, the Black & White Stones, and Jacob's Tapestry.

A lot of big-hitters in there, with not much room for what could be considered lesser props.
