Game of Thrones - What are you favorite characters?

Postby Lyannah Lynn on Sun May 29, 2011 3:26 pm

Both the book and the series provide such great characters that is impossible to think that a fan of Game of Thrones doesn't have one of them he/she loves the most (or even loves to hate the most).

So what is your favorite character so far? And why?

Here are my favorites:

Cersei - What a great woman! I wish we had more of her point of view and I'm glad the series gave her more screen time while surrounded by other people that are not the ones who have their points of view explored in the books (the Starks, Jon and Tyrion). I really hope we get to see more of her! Cersei is the one you'll never know what she's thinking or what she's up to. And her love for the twin brother, as most as it is an incest and gross at first, we can't deny that it's one powerful love. She's a mystery and one of the best characters of the series/book. Loved the actress Lena Headey too (did you notice she was in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles?)

Image

Daenerys - I think it's right to say that this is the character that most developed in the series. She started as a frightened girl, who feared her brother and didn't know her place in the world; now she is a full woman, a khaleesi by right, someone who discovered her own power. For me she is that symbol of womanhood, and her transformation is that of every girl that once and for all has to grow up and discover the power that sleeps inside her and defeat the dragons in life. I know this is a very feminist interpretation of the character -- it's not the only one, but it's not invalid also.

Drogo - The brute with a heart. He is that character that built and image of invincible and untouchable but his wife is his vulnerability, she's the one who brings out his soft side. What a great couple! I just love them so much! Drogo in the books is much more kind to Dany in the beginning of their relationship (i.e. that scene at the beach when they fist have sex), but in the series he's now closer to my interpretation of him in the book (regarding their relationship). I see them as 'the beauty and the beast". What about you?

Image

Of course I like other characters like Tyrion and Aria, but those three are my top favorites.

What about you? What are you favorite characters (in the books and/or the series) and why?

P.S.: GoT Readers, please refrain from writing spoilers on anything that hasn't been shown on TV yet. ;)

Tyrion- There is no doubt in my mind that Tyrion is my favorite character. First of all, if I had to give out a "best actor" award on GoT, it would be to Peter Dinklage. Second, I just love the character. Tyrion overcomes his small stature by having a higher intelligence than his taller counterparts. Instead of fighting his way out of hazardous situations, he "thinks" and talks his way out of them. Also, he provided us all with the greatest moment of the series so far....by slapping the **** out of Prince Goffrey!!

Daenerys- I like the Khaleesi because of her radical transformation since the opening episode. I actually called it. After their first scene of the series, I told a friend of mine that she would eventually stand up to and break free from her brother. It's been a tad bit rushed at times, but I've loved her change. I am very interested to see where her character goes from here now that her brother got his "crown".

Arya Stark- She has been one of my favorite characters since the very beginning. As soon as I saw her first scene where she is sewing with her sister, I knew she was going to be great. Her scenes with Ned are some of the best dramatically. I hope nothing happens to her!!!!

Jon Snow - He's my favorite character because he is mysterious, courageous, learning compassion, and seems to have a special path. He's always the outsider to someone, whether being picked on by his half brothers at home, or being picked on by the less fortunate at the wall. But it seems like there is some big purpose perhaps linked to whom ever his mother is...and I am interested in his journeys beyond the wall and learning about 'the white walkers'...

Ned Stark- Ned Stark I love because despite the fact that he is a horrible politician, or rather he doesn't know how to deal with horrible politicians, he is a good man and is true to himself. He loves his family and is thoughtful towards others. He wants there to be good in the world and so "hope" is in heart of this character.

Arya Stark- I love her because at such a young age she already has a sense that the world is dangerous and cares more about being able to protect herself and those she loves, rather than just being useless or only verbally political...she is proving that women have rights and courageous hearts too, and don't have to just sit by the sidelines and be taken advantage of.

It was hard to choose because, I also love Daenery and Tyrion, as they like Snow and young mis Stark, are all characters who are proving themselves to the world in interesting ways...

I'll go with the boring and common choices: Arya, Tyrion, and Jon.

The one thing I have to say to Lyannah's credit for liking Cersei best is that it is true that none of the characters are black and white and that's what makes the series interesting. Cersei is a great female force to be reckon with and does care deeply for her twin brother and at least her eldest son and since we do not really know the kind of environment the currently eldest Lannisters grew up in, it's hard to just blame her and even Jamie directly for their own political gain and survival in the world. I personally don't care for characters who only care about themselves to the point where their fear prompts them to immediately eliminate other people all the time, but I can see that this is part of what the series is about, fear, and I do look forward to trying to understand Cersei's view, but something really has to be done with that son of hers  ;)

  I'm just gonna say Cersei is misunderstood because she doesn't have a voice in this series...
But all my three choices are in first place actually. And there's Tyrion and Aria... Oh my, I created the poll and I wished I could choose five and not only three

I'm very glad to hear all your opinions, it's nice to see other people's point of view. See? That's what I'm talking about when I say Cersei should have her point of view in the series. :D I agree with you, Darthlocke, when you say we don't know Cersei and Jaime's background and so it's easier to judge them. Maybe if we knew we could be more sympathetic. (But maybe that's not the whole point of the series...)

Now I'm thinking about making a poll of which character you hate the most and why. That should be fun if people don't take it too seriously and be offended or ofensive...

I think it's actually going to be hard to pick characters to hate, except for one....

But thanks for making these polls! They are good fun! :D

I'm glad you're enjoying it!

But maybe it's not hard to find someone to hate in GoT... I have a long list: Joffrey, Cersei (yes, I love her and I hate her at the same time  ), Tywin Lannister, Lysa Arryn and her suckling son of seven, Littlefinger (although I also love to hate him).

As promissed, the poll of hatred is over here!

My favorite from the book and tv series is Eddard Stark. I love the fact that he appears to be such a noble and perfect man (the one true hero of the book and series) and yet we are constantly reminded that he is just a man (he fathered a bastard, he has no idea how to handle the politics of the Seven Kingdoms etc.). This makes him such a relatable guy. It also helps that in the series he is portrayed by Sean Bean.

Funnily enough, I was the one person who chose Littlefinger as one of my favourite characters :P.

Tyrion Lannister: Everyone loves an underdog. Especially one who uses such a distinct disadvantage to his advantage. He's also funny, intelligent, and has an odd sense of honour. He's likable while being a jerk, but not in a slimy charming kind of way. And yes, he bitch slapped Joffrey. Thrice.

Samwell Tarly: Again, an underdog in an awful situation, he comes across as terribly pathetic and yet is one of the most amusing characters to watch on screen. Episode 7 really emphasized his bromance with Jon, which I think is absolutely adorable. His backstory is also sufficiently depressing such that he doesn't lack for depth.

Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish: Yes, I know, he's awful, but he's just so funny! Porn scene aside, he takes some very dry exposition and turns it into exciting and often ominous monologues. He's also incredibly intriguing. I find his moral ambiguity and the fact that we don't really know his goals interesting to watch.

Special Mentions: Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Jorah Mormont

In a series packed with fascinating characters, this is a tough choice.

But I have to agree with Sawyer5665: Tyrion, Dany, and Arya are the ones I enjoy watching the most.
