[How to] Install and setup ChatZilla

ChatZilla is a free IRC client extension for Mozilla Firefox. ChatZilla gives you all the benefits of IRC connectivity within Firefox itself. It is free, lightweight and easy to use; a great client for first-time IRC users who are dissatisfied with the restrictions of the web-based IRC clients available, such as Mibbit and PJIRC.

The following tutorial is a step-by-step and visual reference to the basics of ChatZilla and covers the full process of downloading, installation and first-time use with the SpoilerTV or DarkUFO user in mind.

Download and Install
NOTE: As stated above, ChatZilla is a Mozilla Firefox extention which means you must have Mozilla Firefox installed to use ChatZilla. Mozilla Firefox can be downloaded for free from mozilla.com.

Step 1: Download ChatZilla from the ChatZilla addon page at Mozilla.org (click 'Add to Firefox')
Step 2: When prompted, click 'Install Now' and then you will be asked to restart Firefox, do so.
Step 3: After Firefox restarts, go to Tools --> ChatZilla and ChatZilla will be launched.

Setting up ChatZilla
You now need to set up Chatzilla to automatically connect you to the servers and channels of your choice.

Step 4: Go to ChatZilla --> Preferences
Step 5: The Settings Tabs
General: This is where you decide which nickname you use. I would recommend using the same one as you do on the forums, to make you easier to recognize.
  • Nickname - This is the nickname you want to use on the chat
  • Nickname (away) - The nickname you want to use when you perform the away command (/away) which lets other users on the channel know your status.

You do not need to worry about 'Appearance', 'Lists' and 'DCC' tabs yet so move on to 'Startup'.

Startup: This is where you set up which servers you want to connect to upon starting ChatZilla. #darkufo is on irc.rizon.net so that is the only server we will worry about right now.
  • Auto-load scripts - Nothing to do here
  • Auto Connect Urls - This is where you decide which servers to connect to. Click 'Add' and then add the Rizon network URL:
    Code: Select all
    irc://irc.rizon.net
  • Click 'OK'. You should now auto-connect to Rizon when you start chatzilla.

You don't have to worry about Global or Formatting.

Step 6:Click 'apply' and then exit out of ChatZilla; restart Firefox; launch into ChatZilla again (Tools -> ChatZilla) and open your preferences again. You should see (underneath 'Global Settings' on the left list-view) irc.rizon.net. Select that item.

Step 7: Under the 'General' tabs make sure your nickname is correct and how you want it.

Don't worry about 'Appearance' and move onto 'Lists'.

Step 8: Set up your auto-perform tasks. These are a list of commands ChatZilla will execute when you connect to Rizon.

Common tasks you may wish to auto-perform
  • Identifying - You must first have registered with Rizon (see the Chat FAQ). Click 'Add' and then add the following.
    Code: Select all
    /ns identify YOURPASSWORD

  • Joining a channel - This command is used to automatically join a channel. Click Add and then add the following
    Code: Select all
    /join #darkufo

(NOTE: You can use this to join any channel you want, just replace #darkufo with #channelofyourchoice)

Image

Step 9: Click apply, exit out of ChatZilla, and then re-launch ChatZilla (Tools -> ChatZilla). Once you launch ChatZilla, you should now automatically connect to #darkufo. :)

BigS,

This is excellent! Exactly what I needed the other day ;)

Thank you for posting this!

Now, can you give a list of common commands that you can use while in chat? I see some stuff happening there but am not sure how or why..... also, want to make sure that I am not told to put something that I shouldn't when I ask in chat ;) Also, can you go over the private conversation/private group chat thing?

Lastly, where do I add the commands to make my id more secure? What do I add and where do I add it in Chatzilla? I see you have a +i in your setup, what is that for?

Thanks very very much!!!! :D

BauerUK -

Thanks, :) that is the 1st place I went and I believe I have done everything correctly. I also found this http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/misc/ccosmos.html.

I was just hoping that BigS could simplify it all with regard to setting up Chatzilla as well as the stuff I see happening in Chat (such as TwitterBot).

All IRC commands are universal, regardless of client. I'm not sure what you mean by commands regarding to settup up Chatzilla.

For more information on TwitterBot, join the channel and type: .triggers - this will list TwitterBot commands, however at some point today I'll write-up some more information on TwitterBot as a little reference.
