The First Avenger: Captain America

Postby Iceman on Fri May 23, 2008 4:25 pm

Here is an interview with Kevin Feige

Feige was asked if the Captain America film would be a period piece. He confirmed yes, the story will take place during World War II, just like the comic book origin story. He says they plan to remain very faithful to the source material and completely traditional.

Feige also confirmed that it was definitely the Captain America shield that was seen in IRON MAN on Tony Stark's work-station as he's removing his suit for the first time. It's just an Easter Egg and probably won't have anything to do with the Capt. America story.

What about that casting rumor making its way around the web that Matthew McConaughey would be taking on the role? Nope, Feige says that's absolutely false.

Only way this movie would ever work was if it was a period piece.
And i'm happy it is.

Though i'll be glad to see Tony Stark play a role in Capitan America receiving his shield.
Once he comes to the present, in the Avengers movie etc.

This is the first I've heard of a Captain America movie, a period piece sounds intriguing.

No way should Matthew Fox play CA.
That would ruin the whole movie, and the franchise to follow.

I'd like to see either:

Neal McDonough,
Josh Duhamel,
Tom Jane,
Or a Nobody (Unkown actor).

This movie has a director now:

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Jurassic Park III" director Joe Johnston has signed a deal to bring the Marvel comic-book hero Captain America to the big screen.

"First Avenger: Captain America," a World War II-set movie, is scheduled for release in 2011 through Marvel Studios. No writers are on board, but the studio expects to hire shortly.

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he became a symbol of the war effort, in and out of comics.

The character disappeared in the 1950s but was revived during the early era of Marvel Comics. He was reintroduced as part of the all-star Avengers lineup, the absence explained by having him being in a state of suspended animation during a war mission until found by the superteam.

The character's last live-action appearance was in 1990's "Captain America," a cheap indie production that ended up going to straight to video. The movie starred Matt Salinger as the hero, dethawed in modern times to fight his archnemesis, the Red Skull.

Johnston first met with Marvel two years ago. When the two parties clicked, general talks turned into Captain America-specific meetings, with much of the project's current direction resulting from those early conversations.

Kicking off with "Iron Man," Marvel Studios' slate of movies -- including "Thor" and the "Iron Man" sequel -- is building toward an "Avengers" movie set for release in 2011, in which the characters from the films team for one big adventure.

Johnston is in post-production on Universal's retelling of "The Wolfman," starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.

I'm all for "Nobody."

However, in the interest of naming other celebrities, there's one other name I think could pull it off... Matt Damon.

Bear with me here... He's got the physique, he's a decent actor, he's got the average-boy-next-door look... I know everybody's probably groaning as they're reading this, but if they had to go with a named actor like they did for the other two Marvel Studios releases, I think Damon would be as good as anyone else.

The director has been chosen!

- Joe Johnston has signed on to direct Marvel Studios' "The First Avenger: Captain America" based on characters developed by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. The film will be produced by Marvel Studios' President Kevin Feige. Executive Producers on the project are Louis D'Esposito, Stan Lee and Marvel Studios' Chairman David Maisel. Paramount Pictures will distribute "The First Avenger: Captain America" worldwide. The film will come to theaters domestically on May 6, 2011.

- LOGLINE: In the early days of the Marvel Universe, Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

- Johnston is currently directing "The Wolf Man," which comes to theaters early next year. He is developing "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud". Johnston previously directed "October Sky," "Jumanji," "Jurassic Park III," "The Rocketeer" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." Johnston won an Academy Award® in 1982 for Best Visual Effects for "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

- Marvel Studios most recently announced an agreement with Raleigh Studios to film each of its next four films at Raleigh's facility in Manhattan Beach, CA which will include "The First Avenger: Captain America."

Any idea on who are those 5 candidates?

I have always pictured someone like Aaron Eckhart to be Captain America, but would be weird now that he's part of Batman as Two-Face. :hmm:
