Ultimate Movie Cup: The Wizard of Oz vs. Star Wars CLOSED

Postby Luhks on Fri Sep 18, 2009 1:56 pm

Current Poll: In the Oscar Snub Bracket, a duel between two fantasy films from different eras. The Wizard of Oz essentially had no chance to win Best Picture from 1939. That year's selections are regarded as perhaps the greatest crop of Best Picture nominees in history. Victor Fleming's other release, Gone With the Wind took the top honors, by beating other classics: Nintochka, Dark Victory, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights, Of Mice and Men, Love Affair, Goodbye, Mr, Chips, and of course his own musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. The film achieved only modest commercial success in its initial release, overshadowed by the all-time box-office queen, Gone with the Wind. The AFI today still prefers Gone with the Wind over The WIzard of Oz, but Oz still makes their all-time Top Ten, treating it as one of the greatest films never to win Best Picture. In 1977, the Best Picture race fell squarely between Woody Allen's Annie Hall and George Lucas' Star Wars. Allen's comedy took the awards for Best Picture as well as Best Screenplay and Best Director; Star Wars was left with technical honors; and Lucas would never again have another chance to win an Oscar. Currently, the AFI ranks Star Wars well ahead of its Oscar competition Annie Hall, and also lists Lucas' American Graffiti, but its 1973 opponent The Sting is nowhere to be found.

Oh well, I know it's obviously going to lose, but my vote goes to The Wizard of Oz. I liked the Star Wars films, but not that much. I can say that I really like some of the characters, rather than the story per se, but I know it is one of those big cult classic films and respect it for it.

I voted for Star Wars, but The Wizard of Oz is the best musical I've ever seen:

I am going to cry about this, but I vote for Star Wars
