Ultimate Movie Cup: E.T. vs. Empire Strikes Back CLOSED

Postby Luhks on Sun Sep 20, 2009 3:09 am

Current Poll: The Blockbuster Bracket would not be complete without a showdown between two of the most financially successful filmmakers. George Lucas made his mark in the 1970s with American Graffiti, and then risked everything to bring Star Wars to the screen, as an independent film. His good friend Steven Spielberg achieved nearly the same degree of success with Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Together, the two collaborated with Harrison Ford on another wild money-maker Raiders of the Lost Ark from 1981. For better or worse, Lucas and Spielberg changed the movie business in ways that can still be measured to this day. For his 1980 sequel to Star Wars, Lucas oversaw the project as writer and producer, and stuck to his independent roots while jeaprodizing his fortune in the process. He turned over the director helm to Irvin Kershner, who earned a reputation as more of an actor's director. Two years later, Spielberg managed to top Empire at the box-office with his personal project E.T. The Extra-Terrestrail. Empire was so markedly different from its predecessor that it received mixed critical reception at the time, and little recognition from the Academy Awards. Today, the film is the consensus choice as the best of the six Star Wars films. E.T. nearly took home the Best Picture Oscar, but Richard Attenborough's biopic Gandhi. Attenborough had a great admiration for Spielberg's work, and he would later state that he believed that Spielberg's E.T, what he called "an achievement of pure cinema" should have won the top honors. A decade later, Attenborough starred as John Hammond in Spielberg's Jurassic Park, and the role remains perhaps his most famous one.

Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice.

Next Poll: Finishing off Round One with two of the biggest action films released within the past decade, both with superheroes that are really not superheroes.

The Empire Strikes Back. I find if funny that the best in the series is the one that Lucas was probably the least involved with the production of. Lawrence Kasdan wrote the final screenplay, and Kershner directed. :hmm:

E.T.

I simply love it, and you know I'm not a Star Wars fan. :)

I just watched Gandhi for the first time last night, and I have to disagree with Mr. Attenborough. I think Gandhi deserved Best Picture over E.T..

How interesting. I'm not a huge fan of Star Wars and have seen the first trilogy only once. Still, I liked it better than E.T, and voted The Empire Strikes Back.

Every day has its surprise.
