Postby Luhks on Sun Sep 20, 2009 3:50 pm

Final Round One Poll: The greatest action film of the 1990s (aside from Terminator 2: Judgment Day) against the greatest action film of the 2000s. No further introductions are really necessary here.

I had to go with The Dark Knight. I still remember how awesome I thought it was when I watched The Matrix, but The Dark Knight blew me away.

As an avid Batman fan in general I prefer The Dark Knight, but The Matrix is probably more influential in purely action terms and I expect it to win. Both were great blockbusters with big ideas though, and proved you don't need to appeal to the lowest common denominator to score big bucks.

Shame about those Matrix sequels of course.

EDIT - bit of trivia, when Nolan pitched his batman series to Warner's, he stated that he wanted the action to be nothing like the Matrix, which he felt was too balletic and neglected the reality of violence and pain...

Bah this kills me.

On the one hand I was never a fan of the Matrix, but on the other, The Dark Knight was severely overrated and over-hyped. Yes it was good, but Batman Begins was just as good. The whole thing surrounding Heath was blown way out of proportion imo.

But I did enjoy The Dark Knight more than the Matrix so that gets my vote.

I love them both. I rate the Dark Knight slightly higher...

But I decided to tie up the vote and go with The Matrix ;)

I'm a fan of both but unless you have a penchant for origin stories I'd have to say TDK is better than its predecessor in every category. A more complex Batman, a brilliantly realized villain, better and deeper supporting cast, much more ambitious story, far better action.

But hey, that's just my opinion. If the third Nolan film is as good as the first 2 then we could be looking at cinema's first genuinely great trilogy. The 2nd and 3rd Back to the Future films are too sketchy to merit that title.

The Dark Knight without a doubt. The Matrix is very good and was a real stepping stone in the action genre, but The Dark Knight is proof that not all Superhero movies need to be made by the common superhero movie "formula". The Dark Knight was basically made as an action drama and if you had taken out the Batman and Joker names and replaced them with just some vigilante and insane anarchist, then the movie would have still worked just fine. The Dark Knight is a classic!

I wonder how many people actually forget to vote in each poll. I just happened to notice it a few times.

The Dark Knight is proof that not all Superhero movies need to be made by the common superhero movie "formula".

I actually think The Matrix is ultimately a superhero movie. The structure is outstanding: Act One is a mystery film; Act Two is a science-fiction film; and Act Three is an action film. All three parts excel within their own genre.
