It looks Buddhist to me. Kinda like this:

Yeah, perhaps. But it can easily be linked to the Egyptian influence on the island.

Interesting discussion here, guys (and gal ^-^). Which gave me this probably far-fetched idea, but since it's LOST, hey... has it ever been brought up that Richard and Jacob may be the same person?

Richard's insistence on being the second and choosing a leader does not fit the actual mentality of society. That would be in accordance to the theory that he's coming from an ancient civilisation, where blood rights lead the power. On the other hand, ageless Richard might have some other powerful tricks hiding in the cabin...

What decides of Jacob's power? What force/entity could reduce its influence? The "help me!" underlines a loss of capabilites it seems.

I'm more inclined to think Jacob is a manifestation of the island itself rather than any other person but it would be a hell of a twist if he did turn out to be Alpert :D And it might explain why Richard can't just go and visit himself ;)

Jacob, as we can remember from 3x20 "The Man Behind The Curtain", is a helpless man and needs a helpful hand, as he says "Help me!" to Locke. But Ben seems to trying to help Jacob in the same episode, so why Jacob needs help? Maybe Jacob lost his connection to the island? :P

Or Jacob is the island and that 'Help me' was the island's plea for assistance. It would resonate in the conversation between Locke and Jack at the Orchid when Locke said the island needed to be protected and Jack was incredulous.

Locke: If you have to go, then you have to lie about everything... everything that happened since we got to the island it's the only way to protect it.
Jack: It's an island, John. No one needs to protect it.
Locke: It's not an island. It's a place where miracles happen.

Maybe... Jacob is so connected to the island that when John talked to him (or his assistance Christian :P ), he actually talked to the island.

Weird. I've answered this last night before going to bed and it wasn't here this morning. Nor was the new thread I started. Must have got drunk on soya milk. :S

Julietislost, I was saying that you are right. Polar bear burgers was the thought, but translated into LOL Speak it just naturally shortened. Never over estimate lol talk, preciousssss..... :D

Why does Jacob even lives in a cabin? What makes that cabin so important for him? Is it a gate to talk to the island? If so, while creating the cabin, did Goodspeed ever think about what he was doing?

Interesting stuff...

Great question Kid_A

I've thought about that ever since 'Cabin Fever' and Locke's encounter with Goodspeed:

Locke: And what are you doing out here?
Horace: Oh, building a place. A little getaway for me and the missus.

This would explain many of the features and eccentricities of the cabin; the painting of the dog, the jars of liquid (painting supplies?), the chest etc. All of those things are probably Horace's possessions. The questions is, when and why did Jacob decide to move in? I speculated in another topic that it was for convenience; a place known to Ben and perhaps a logical meeting point. Until the aforementioned schemer 'trapped' Jacob there. Even so, with the ash now seemingly removed, (something I think Ben may even have done himself to make Jacob mobile again and make things difficult for Locke) and the cabin capable of moving/teleporting, Jacob still remains there.

Maybe Horace had a secret deal with Jacob, after Dharma moved onto the island. Jacob never liked the technology and electricity, and Horace promised to build a cabin for him so that nobody could disturb Jacob with his fobbies.

OR, Horace had a dream, like Ben and Locke did, and saw that he needed to build a cabin, but didn't know the reason of it.
