Your Favourite Lyrics?

Postby Finli Otego on Wed Dec 10, 2008 4:41 am

What are some of your favourite song lyrics and why?

I'll start with one of my all time favourites:
"The Times They Are A-Changin'" by Bob Dylan
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

If i put every song with good lyrics here we will all be damned....

Dream Theater - Space Dye Vest wrote:Falling through pages of Martens on angels
Feeling my heart pull west
I saw the future dressed as a stranger
love in a space-dye vest

Love is an act of blood and I'm bleeding
a pool in the shape of a heart
Beauty projection in the reflection
Always the worst way to start

[Sample is Julian Sands from the film "A Room With A View"]
"But he's the sort who can't know
anyone intimately, least of all a
woman. He doesn't know what a woman
is. He wants you for a possession,
something to look at like a painting or an ivory box.
Something to own and to display. He doesn't want you to be real,
or to think or to live. He doesn't love you, but I love you.
I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and
feelings, even when
I hold you in my arms. It's our last chance... It's our
last chance..."

Now that you're gone I'm trying to take it
Learning to swallow the rage
Found a new girl I think we can make it
as long as she stays on the page

This is not how I want it to end
And I'll never be open again

[Sample from "The Trouble With Evan", from the Canadian series "The Fifth Estate"]
"...I was gonna move out...ummm...get,
get a job, get my own place, ummm,
but... I go into the mall where I
want to work and they tell me, I'm,
I was too young..."

[Sample is Jim Hill from a news commentary about the OJ Simpson freeway chase]
"Some people, gave advice before,
about facing the facts, about
facing reality. And this is, this
without a doubt, is his biggest
challenge ever. He's going to have to face it.
You're gonna have to try, he's gonna to have to try and,
uh, and, and, and get some help here. I mean no one can
say they know how he feels."

[Sample from the Conan O'Brien show]
"That, so they say that, in ya know
like, Houston or something, you'd
say it's a hundred and eighty degrees,
but it's a dry heat.
In Houston they say that?
Oh, maybe not. I'm all mixed up.
Dry until they hit the swimming pool."

[Sample from "The Trouble With Evan", from the Canadian series "The Fifth Estate"]
"...I get up with the sun... Listen.
You have your own room to sleep in,
I don't care what you do. I don't
care when. That door gets locked,
that door gets locked at night by nine o'clock.
If you're not in this house by nine o'clock, then you'd
better find some
place to sleep. Because you're not going to be a bum in
this house.
Supper is ready..."

There's no one to take my blame
if they wanted to
There's nothing to keep me sane
and it's all the same to you
There's nowhere to set my aim
so I'm everywhere
Never come near me again
do you really think I need you

I'll never be open again, I could never be open again.
I'll never be open again, I could never be open again.

And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend
And I'll never be open again
And I'll have no more dreams to defend
And I'll never be open again

I love this song is mellow calm andf ahs a ppunch and hidden meaning...

Soundgarden - 'The Day I Tried to Live'

I woke the same as any other day
Except a voice was in my head
It said seize the day, pull the trigger
Drop the blade, and watch the rolling heads

The day I tried to live
I stole a thousand beggar's change
And gave it to the rich
The day I tried to win
I dangled from the power lines
And let the martyrs stretch

Singing

One more time around might do it
One more time around might make it
One more time around might do it
One more time around
The day I tried to live

Words you say never seem
To live up to the ones inside your head
The lives we make never seem
To ever get us anywhere but dead

The day I tried to live
I wallowed in the blood and mud with
All the other pigs

I woke the same as any other day you know
I should have stayed in bed

The day I tried to win
I wallowed in the blood and mud with
All the other pigs

And I learned that I was a liar
Just like you

Soundgarden, and specifically Chris Cornell, were inspired songwriters. The message is always there but at times it's beautifully cryptic.

Well, the first one that comes into my mind is NIN's 'Right were it belongs'. I love it simply because it's a call to look a little bit further, to put yourself in the other's perspective, get out of yourself and observe you and all the the things that surround you, even if what you see might not be pleasant. To make you wonder if because of keeping the safety and, supposed order of your life, you're missing a whole new world that has always been there. People can't find what they want if they don't allow themselves to break some "rules" and take the risk. The most powerful part, imo, are the last two lines. The melody and pace of this song is just beautiful.

"Right Where It Belongs"
Lyrics and music: Trent Reznor.

See the animal in his cage that you built
Are you sure what side you're on?
Better not look him too closely in the eye
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?
See the safety of the life you have built
Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart
And it's all
Right where it belongs

[Chorus:]
What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you want it to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks?
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afraid to see?

What if all the world's inside of your head
Just creations of your own?
Your devils and your gods
All the living and the dead
And you're really all alone?
You can live in this illusion
You can choose to believe
You keep looking but you can't find the woods
While you're hiding in the trees

NIN's lyrics can often lead to different interpretations and that's great. Obviously, this is not the case, it is a very clear song, but it's still great. :D

There´s a lot songs with great lyrics, but I´m putting the one where I took my name

Unfurl Katatonia

At city centre 9 pm
Just like you wrote
And I try to think about
Snow coming in
Just like before
I will be on stand-by

Releasing the vapour
Into the lung
Letting the wings unfurl
And for a moment I feel young
I call on the bird
Unfurl

It’s time to choose side now
That’s what you said
When we talked on the phone
So white our eyes
You are still
Are you paralyzed

I love those lyrics too Ana

Amen - Kid Rock (Seriously, the lyrics are good, no matter what you think of him ;) )

It's another night in hell
Another child won't live to tell
Can you imagine what it's like to starve to death

And as we sit free and well
Another soldier has to yell
Tell my wife and children I love them in his last breath

C'mon now amen, amen, amen

Habitual offenders, scumbag lawyers with agendas
I'll tell you sometimes people I don't know what's worse
Natural disasters or these wolves in sheep clothes pastors
Now God damn it I'm scared to send my children to church
And how can we seek salvation when our nations race relations
Got me feeling guilty of being white
But faith in human nature, our creator and our savior, I'm no saint
But I believe in what is right

C'mon now amen, amen
I said amen, amen

Stop pointing fingers and take some blame,
Pull your future away from the flame
Open up your mind and start to live
Stop short changing your neighbors
Living off hand outs and favors, and maybe
Give a little bit more than you got to give

Simplify, testify, identify, rectify
And if I get high stop being so uptight
It's only human nature and I am not a stranger
So baby won't you stay with me tonight

When a calls away
to break the sound
I'm faden down, I need someone
Oh to be someone
They just sinken down, and holden back
I hold the dawn and run
They don't save a child
Oh, to save a child

It's a matter of salvation from them patience up above,
So don't give up so damn easy on the one you love, one you love
Somewhere you got a brother, sister, friend, grandmother, niece or nephew
Just dying to be with you
You know there's someone out there who unconditionally, religiously, loves you
So just hold on 'cause you know it's true
And if you can take the pain
And you can withstand anything, and one day
Stand hand in hand with the truth

I said amen, I said amen
I said amen, I said amen,

Amen

Paul McCartney - Maybe I’m Amazed wrote:Baby Im amazed at the way you love me all the time
Maybe Im afraid of the way I love you
Baby Im amazed at the the way you pulled me out of time
Hung me on a line
Maybe Im amazed at the way I really need you

Baby Im a man and maybe Im a lonely man
Whos in the middle of something
That he dosent really understand
Babe Im a man and maybe youre the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby wont you help to me understand

Baby Im a man and maybe Im a lonely man
Whos in the middle of something
That he dosent really understand
Babe Im a man and maybe youre the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby wont you help me understand

Baby Im amazed at the way youre with me all the time
Maybe Im afraid of the way I leave you
Baby Im amazed at the way you help me sing my song
You right me when Im wrong
Maybe Im amazed at the way I really need you

Tracy Chapman - "Let It Rain"

Let it rain
As I walk these streets unknown
To no one named
Not even myself
When I'm low

Give me hope
That help is coming
When I need it most
Give me hope
That help is coming
When I need it most

Let it go
No mother no father no home
Forget as all others
Have forgotten
When I'm alone

But give me hope
That help is coming
When I need it most
Give me hope
That help is coming
When I need it most

Let it come
Love that lifts me up
Pain that brings me down
Everything I'd ever want and don't
When I'm not strong

But give me hope
That help is coming
When I need it most
Give me hope
That help is coming
When I need it most

Let it rain
Let it flood these streets and wash me away
To where it makes no difference who I am
Or what the future holds
When I don't know

But give me hope
That help is coming
When I need it most
Give me hope
That help is coming
When I need it most

In Your Room
Written by: Martin L. Gore.

In your room
Where time stands still
Or moves at your will
Will you let the morning come soon?
Or will you leave me lying here?
In your favourite darkness
Your favourite half-light
Your favourite consciousness
Your favourite slave

In your room
Where souls disappear
Only you exist here
Will you lead me to your armchair?
Or leave me lying here?
Your favourite innocence
Your favourite prize
Your favourite smile
Your favourite slave

I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?

In your room
Your burning eyes
Cause flames to arise
Will you let the fire die down soon?
Or will I always be here?
Your favourite passion
Your favourite game
Your favourite mirror
Your favourite slave

I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?

For me, this song is about addictions, of any kind, and the internal fight someone goes through as a consequence. EDIT: Of course, this is a song by Depeche Mode. I just forgot to put it. :P

Laundry Day, by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen wrote:Laundry Day. See you there.
Underthings...tum-b-ling.

Wanna say "Love your hair."
Here I go (mmmrrhhrr) mum-b-ling.

With my freeze ray I will stop - the world.

With my freeze ray I will find the time to find the words to

Tell you how. How you make.
Make me feel. What's the phrase?

Like a fool. Kinda sick.
Special needs. Anyways.

With my freeze ray I will stop - the pain.

It's not a death ray or an ice beam, that's all Johnny Snow.

I just think you need time to know
That I'm the guy to make it real.
The feelings you don't dare to feel.
I'll bend the world to our will
And we'll make Time stand ... sti - ll.

That's the plan. Rule the world.
You and me. Any day.
Love your hair. (What? No, I, I, I love the air.) Anyway.

With my freeze ray I will stop--

C'mon, Joss Whedon's dialog in a song? How awesome is that? Besides, sung by Neil Patrick Harris. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfaXt1rC2G0

It fluctuates to me. When I'm in a good mood, I identify with "Laundry Day", and when I'm in a bad mood, I'm singing "On The Rise" more. But I agree, they are both great :P

Wow, nice lyrics everyone!
Here's another one of my favourites by CRASS called Punk Is Dead.
It was written 30 years ago during the peak of the punk movement, but I think it applies to the "punk" of today just as well.
PUNK IS DEAD by CRASS

Yes that's right, punk is dead.
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors.
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.
CBS promote the Clash.
Ain't for revolution, it's just for cash.
Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be.
Ain't got a thing to do with your or me.

Movements are systems and systems kill.
Movements are expressions of the public will.
Punk became a movement cos we all felt lost.
Leaders sold out and now we all pay the cost.
Punk narcissism was a social napalm.
Steve Jones started doing real harm.
Preaching revolution, anarchy and change.
Sucked from the system that had given him his name.

Well I'm tired of staring through sh*t stained glass.
Tired of staring up a superstars arse.
I've got an arse and crap and a name.
I'm just waiting for my fifteen minutes fame.

Steven Jones, you're napalm.
If you're so pretty vacant, why do you smarm?
Patti Smith, you're napalm, your write with your hand
but it's Rimbaud's arm

And me, yes, I, do I want to burn?
Is there something I can learn?
Do I need a business man to promote my angle?
Can I resist the carrots that fame and fortune dangle?
I see the velvet zippies in their bondage gear.
The social elite with safetypins in their ear.
I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing.
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD
:cursing:

This is a song by an English band called James. They were big in the 90s, then split up but are back together again now. This song portrays some of their finest moments musically, as well as lyrically.

I see you falling
How long to go before you hit the ground?
You keep on screaming
Don’t you see me here?
Am I a ghost to you?
Now your grip’s too strong
Can’t catch love with a net or a gun
Gotta keep faith that your path will change
Gotta keep faith that your luck will change tomorrow
Tomorrow

Why are you phoning
What am I to do when you’re miles away
You’re always calling from the darkest rooms and we’re both scared

Now your grip’s to strong
Can’t catch love with a net or a gun
Gotta keep faith that your path will change
Gotta keep faith that your love will change

Now your grip’s to strong
Can’t catch love with a net or a gun
Gotta keep faith that your path will change
Gotta keep faith that your love will change tomorrow

I’m just out of your range
Tomorrow
All your suffering’s in vain
Tomorrow

Now your grip’s to strong
Can’t catch love with a net or a gun
Gotta keep faith that your path will change
Gotta keep faith that your love will change tomorrow

I got out of your range
Tomorrow
All your suffering seems vain
Change tomorrow
Some forgiveness now
Tomorrow
Love’s no sacred cow
