I can't see him being caught until the last season. If he went on the run it would be weird cos he would lose all his connections with Miami metro.

Who would he interact with?

It's hard to imagine the father from My Three Sons in a mess like this. TV's newest widowed dad, Dexter Morgan, has left his kids at home to get the goods on a suspect he thinks may be a murderer. If that's true, Dex will probably have to kill the guy, just as he's offed 60-odd other psychos since the Showtime series began in 2006. Of course, Dexter himself might be the next casualty if he keeps the kids and their new nanny waiting much longer.

"It's definitely not easy balancing single fatherhood with the sort of affliction Dexter has," Michael C. Hall says with wry amusement on the set in Los Angeles, where Season 5 finds his character dealing with the aftermath of his wife Rita's death. In case you missed the most jaw-dropping twist in Dexter history, here's what went down in last season's finale: Just when Dexter finally did away with Arthur Mitchell (Emmy winner John Lithgow), the Trinity Killer, he came home to find Rita (Julie Benz) dead in a bathtub of blood. Their 6-month-old son, Harrison, saw the whole thing — just as Dexter had watched his own mother get murdered. "It was very chilling and extremely sad, both because of what Dexter was going through and what it signified for Harrison, but also because we were sad to say goodbye to Julie," Hall says.

In the September 26 premiere — Showtime's best season opener in 15 years with 2.3 million viewers — the grieving blood-spatter specialist disappeared right before Rita's funeral then whacked a vagrant just so he could feel again. He later broke the news of Rita's death to his two stepkids while wearing Mickey Mouse ears ("I'm sorry for your loss" wasn't exactly the warmest approach). Meanwhile, Dexter's sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), can't figure out why Dex sounded so guilty at Rita's crime scene.

Over at Miami Metro Homicide, Quinn (Desmond Harrington) is dubious as he pieces together clues on Dexter's connection to "Kyle Butler," the alias Dex used with Trinity. Oh, and now that bodies are piling up — beautiful girls in metal barrels, Latinos with their heads sliced off — Dexter needs to find a nanny (Maria Doyle Kennedy) who won't cramp his killing style. "If she doesn't connect the dots on what Dexter's doing, it would be a miracle," Hall says.

The real miracle is that Hall is back to work at all. Nearly a year ago, the actor, then 38, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a fact he concealed even from coworkers until his chemotherapy forced him to go public. When he arrived at the Golden Globes in a wool hat to hide his hair loss, the reality hit that mortality wasn't only something Hall's character thought about. "It was a shock to all of us," says executive producer John Goldwyn. "The way in which Michael stoically went through treatment and carried himself with grace was an inspiration."

Hall, who in person has an aversion to chattiness, not unlike Dexter, says the cancer is now in full remission, but admits the experience changed him. "I would like to think I have a greater sense of gratitude as a person and also for the work we're doing on the show," says Hall, whose father died at age 39 from prostate cancer. His biggest relief is that the treatment coincided with Dexter's hiatus, he says, "so nobody lost work on my account."

Hall's illness came a year after he and costar Carpenter eloped at the end of 2008. Carpenter is as animated and forthcoming as her husband is reserved. "To have life come at you in such a big way, from the second Michael was diagnosed until we finally heard the doctors say he's going to be OK, was beyond anything I've ever experienced," she says. "But it became an opportunity to grow and really appreciate each other. In a strange way, his illness was the best thing that ever happened to us." Carpenter chokes up but then laughs. "And Michael's hair is more gorgeous now than it's ever been."

Jesse in California: Thanks for the Julia Stiles interview about Dexter! Do you have anything else to tease about her character today?
No matter what it looks like right now, Lumen's (Julia) existence in Dexter's life will not remain a secret for long. "Lumen does have a little bit of interaction with the other characters," Julia Stiles tells us. Hmmm...

Read below an interview of Julia Stiles about her character on Dexter! (It contains spoilers)

We love Julia Stiles. And we love Julia Stiles on Dexter. So as much as you're going to want to hate the new lady in Dexter's life, we promise it's safe to give this new girl a chance! She's not Lila 2.0 (you know, that psycho "other woman" from season two), and she's not a replacement for the late, great Rita (Julie Benz). We recently caught up with Julia to discuss her unique new role, and she told us that the newest Dexter character is definitely more complicated than she seems at first glance:

Welcome to the wonderful world of Dexter. Tell us a little about your character, Lumen.
Julia Stiles: She comes into Dexter's life, and she's very mysterious. You only slowly learn where she's come from, and it's clear that she's experienced a major trauma and has a really hard time moving past that and getting on with her life.

How would you describe your relationship with Dexter? Is he already moving on from Rita with this new woman?
J.S.: Lumen is not a replacement for Rita. The relationship that she has with Dexter is very unconventional. It's intimate, but this is not your typical romance that you would see anywhere else. Their connection is one that is really profound. Also, her name is very significant in terms of what she brings to Dexter's life. [Editor's note: The word lumen means "a measure of the power of light perceived by the human eye," so at this point we're choosing to believe that Julia's character is instrumental in Dexter's healing process.]

We know that Lumen sticks around for the rest of season five. How quickly does this unconventional relationship with Dexter develop?
J.S.: There's a lot that happens between Dexter and Lumen. You can definitely say that it's charged; it develops.

Before Lumen's captor Boyd (Shawn Hatosy) was killed last night, he said that he was actually helping the women he had murdered—which would have soon included your character. Should we trust Lumen, or is she hiding something?
J.S.: Lumen does have a secret that she's carrying around. But I'm convinced that I'm going to have some big surprise thrown at me about her in the next final three episodes. The writers are very good at keeping everything a secret.

Final question: Do Dexter and Lumen fall in love?
J.S.: It depends on your definition of love. There are many different ways to show love that can be interpreted in many different ways. Plus, emotions with Dexter are already so unconventional that it's hard to put the word love in there.

What do you think of Julia? Or better yet, what to you think of Lumen?! We're not sure we trust her yet, but we're definitely sticking around to find out more. Don't miss Dexter Sunday's at 9 p.m. on Showtime.

3 new Promos

the first one is an OMG momentk but I have a feeling it's just clever editing, as usual. Looks very tense though.

we have seen Dexter lose a victim from the table before though. Hopefully this will have a nice twist.

Riley in Palm Desert, Calif.: Peter Weller (aka RoboCop) deserved an Emmy nomination for his guest spot in Fringe—are we going to see more of him in Dexter?
Dexter is going guest star to the max! The inimitable Peter Weller returns as Quinn's (Desmond Harrington) private Doakes dick; joining him are Chris Vance (Mental, Burn Notice) as security chief for motivational speaker Jordan Chase (Eli Stone's Jonny Lee Miller). You knew Boyd's creepy "Take it now!" tapes would come back to haunt us, right?

Jojo via Twitter: I need to know what's going to happen with Lumen on Dexter. The tension is killing me!
You're not the only one! Next week Dex finally targets a fresh kill—but as usual, things don't go smoothly. This botched attempt leads to a hilariously staged murder scene—but also a deeper, trusting relationship between Dexter and Lumen (Julia Stiles). We just wish we didn't have to see that bloody bathtub again. Don't people take showers anymore?

Latest from Kristin

Randy Tepper/Showtime
Jamie: Do things settle down for Batista on Dexter now that LaGuerta got his assault charges dropped?
"Think of the history of Angel Batista," David Zayas (Batista) himself responded when we asked the fiery Dexter star your question at The Walking Dead premiere. "He's been stabbed, he's frequented prostitutes who turned out to be his girlfriend, he's married his boss, he's a survivor. I leave that answer like that."

Mike in Ramona, Calif.: I'm not sure how I feel about Quinn and Deb together on Dexter. What's coming up with that storyline?
Dexter is getting hot and heavy, and it's all because of the full-fledged romance (yep, we used the "R" word!) going on between Deb and Quinn. Things between these two develop quickly, and before you know it, the topic of living together will actually be broached. Hmmm, wonder what Deb will do when she finds out Quinn (aka Doakes 2.0) is going after her big bro in a big way?

Daniel in Chicago: Julia Stiles is great on Dexter. Are we going to keep seeing more of her?
More…and more and more. And it's pretty fantastic stuff. Dexter soon realizes that he and his new "friend" have more in common than he'd originally thought, so he agrees to take Lumen on as his "partner" and even introduces her to little Harrison. But wait, doesn't Harry's Code advise against both things? Better be careful, Dexy-poo
