The Series 5 Filming Reports Thread

Postby The Strog on Mon Jul 20, 2009 11:44 pm

Thought it would be good to get all these in one place. We all can post and discuss any set reports in this thread.

As some of you guys already know, the Steven Moffat era of DW officially kicked off today! Filming began this morning and we've already got some tidbits of information regarding Series 5. This post if full of...stuff...so strap yourselves in.

Okay, first up is the official press release (which, I might add, I stayed up until 4am just to see) from the BBC where Matt Smith's and Karen Gillan's costumes are revealed and Gillan's character name is revealed.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8158556.stm

Doctor Who fans have been given their first look at the new costume being worn by Matt Smith, the 11th actor to play the role.

The Time Lord's new look consists of tweed jacket, bow tie, rolled up trousers and black boots.

Filming on the new episodes begins on Monday in Cardiff, with the new series going out in spring 2010.

Smith is taking over from David Tennant, whose last episodes will be shown at the end of the year.

"I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show," Smith said after arriving on set for his first day of filming.

'Come alive'

"The scripts are brilliant - I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."

And then there's some very boring, very short footage of the paparazzi at the bottom of the page.

Here are some snippets from the official Doctor Who website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/news/ ... 20_news_01

Filming has at last started on the next series of Doctor Who! New showrunner and long-running Doctor Who fan Steven Moffat has developed this series and, as Lead Writer and Executive Producer, will be responsible for the overall creative direction of the show, as well as plot and character arcs. His previous episodes of Doctor Who, including the BAFTA-winning episode Blink, have garnered widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike.

Discussing the series, Moffat commented, 'And here it is, the big moment - the new Doctor, and his new best friend. And here's me, with the job I wanted since I was seven. 40 years to here! If I could go back in time and tell that little boy that one day all this would happen, he'd scream, call for his Mum and I'd be talking to you now from a prison cell in 1969. So probably best not then. Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way - and best of all, somewhere out there, a seven-year-old is going to see them, fall in love, and start making a forty year plan...'

Piers Wenger, Executive Producer and Head of Drama, BBC Wales added, 'The scripts for the new series are every bit as funny, thrilling, scary and imaginative as you'd expect from the man who brought us The Empty Child and Blink. There's a strange and perfect alchemy between Steven and Matt Smith and the next few months are going to be riveting as that relationship starts to emerge on screen. Steven always says he's been waiting to do this job since he was seven. But it's actually the Doctor who has been waiting for him.'

The new series follows on from three Doctor Who specials starring David Tennant which will transmit later this year.

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning says, 'I am thrilled that a whole new generation of children will forever say that their Doctor was the wonderful Matt Smith.'

The series was co-commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning for BBC One and Jay Hunt, Controller of BBC One and will be produced by Tracie Simpson (Doctor Who) and Peter Bennett (Torchwood). Steven Moffat is Lead Writer and Executive Producer (Jekyll) with Piers Wenger, Head of Drama, BBC Wales and Beth Willis (Ashes to Ashes), also Executive Producing.

Filming is taking place in Cardiff right through to March, 2010 and we'll be here to bring you the production news as it happens. So stay tuned. The journey starts right here!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/news/ ... 20_news_02

Details are beginning to emerge about the next Doctor's companion, and the big news is she'll be called Amy Pond.

Back in May we revealed that the new companion will be played by 21 year old Karen Gillan, but until now her character's full name has been more carefully guarded than the Doctor's 'real' name! Amy will travel in the TARDIS alongside the new Doctor, played by Matt Smith, when the next series of Doctor Who begins in 2010.

Amy Pond is another memorable moniker from the new series Head Writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, whose previous creations include Sally Sparrow and River Song. The latest photo which we revealed earlier today indicates Amy will have a laid back, contemporary look. So far we've had no suggestion as to whether we'll meet the new companion's family, or even if she has a family. But time will tell, and we'll be here to bring you Amy's story as it unfolds!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/news/ ... 20_news_03

Filming has begun on the new series of Doctor Who and the first sneak peek of the next Doctor's costume is revealed today so we can now confirm - he's looking good! Matt Smith will play the Eleventh Doctor when the new series starts in 2010 and as shooting began he commented, 'I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show. The scripts are brilliant and working alongside Karen [Gillan], Steven [Moffat] and the rest of the crew is an inspiration because their work ethic and passion for the show is so admirable. I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor.'

When the Doctor returns in 2010 he'll be dashing across the universe with Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan. His new costume comprises black boots, dark trousers, a smart shirt and bow tie with a light brown jacket completing the ensemble. It says adventure. It says laid back cool. It says Time Lord chic and we're loving it!

The choice of clothing for the Doctor is both crucial and high profile. From Tom Baker's iconic multicoloured scarf to the effortlessly stylish look favoured by David Tennant in his brown suit and flowing coat, the Time Lord's attire becomes a cultural reference point, as linked to the character as James Bond's dinner suit or Sherlock Holmes' deerstalker.

The new series of Doctor Who has begun filming and we'll be bringing you all the production news as it happens. It promises to be quite a ride!

Now for the really good stuff.

Apparently, Alex Kingston is going to be in Series 5:

http://www.digitalspy.com/cult/a166258/ ... r-who.html

Whether or not she is returning as River Song...that's not been confirmed. It is very probable, however.

Further speculation suggests that the filming carried out today was for Ep. 4 of Series 5. If Kingston is going to be appearing in a two-parter, it would suggest Ep. 4 and Ep. 5 of Series 5 would be the first two parter of the series. And it would also confirm that it's a Moffat two parter, as Smith had said in an interview at one point that he had read two Moffat scripts, and that they were Ep. 1 and Ep. 4.

Some other rumors floating around are that the episode takes place in the 60s and that it's being directed by Adam Smith, who apparently has done some work for Skins in the past.

And the TARDIS has been revamped for HD!

Image

Here's a set report filed by Scooty from Gallifrey Base:

Well, well, well what an eventful morning! I was always dubious about a return to Bad Wolf Bay for the DW team, but lo and behold that is indeed where they were today, not anywhere that was actually used in Doomsday or Journeys End, but nevertheless this beach is turning into the most important location in Nu Who's history! We arrived at the beach and there was the TARDIS, not the TARDIS of recent times, but the Hartnell one. Retro. Back to basics. This is Moffat injecting the classic series right into the new series.

Anyhoodle, the TARDIS seems to have landed next to the crash landing of some sort of alien spaceship. Debris everywhere, all around and smoke is billowing all around. Thick smoke. Then Matt and Karen leave the TARDIS and have a look around. Flames around the TARDIS....River Song in a long black flowing dress seems to already be there. But she isn't unknown to the Doctor. He clearly recognises her as friendly and they have a chat. This scene was filmed over and over again.

On the behind the scenes front, both Karen and Matt were wonderful - polite, friendly, posing for photos, always smilie. I even got my picture with the new companion! Brilliant!

And here are the photos he managed to snag. These were ALL TAKEN BY SCOOTY:

More info that suggests the crew will be back tomorrow, and then move on to the Forest of Dean from Wednesday to Friday:

Filming finished at 3pm as the forces of nature and imparticular the ever increasing tidal currents of the Bristol Estuary halted filming. I am informed they are back on Southerndown Beach tomorrow late morning/early afternoon. Then and I think certain posters (Emma/MirandaMayhem) might be interested to know that filming on wednesday - friday is taking place in the Forest of Dean. But its a big forest!

I'm psyched for Series 5! :D

And might I just add that Karen is the hottest companion ever.

Cheers Strog, great collection of spoilers here

I love the new look for the Doctor, The Mirror had a nice piece in today where they tied most of his outfit up with past Doctors: the bowtie from Pertwee, braces from Troughton, McCoys shirt, Eccleston's trousers and Tennant's floppy hair, the only iconic item missing is Tom's scarf

Karen is wearing Converse trainers, too!

On to today's stuff:

Actually some pics from yesterday, but we get a peek at the new sonic screwdriver.

You aren't any better than those DT fangirls...those eleven year old girls that only watch DW because of him and who are gonna stop watching when he leaves. You don't like good science fiction, you just like gazing at Tennant for forty minutes!

While I, on the other hand, LOVE good science fiction and like gazing at Tennant for forty minutes.

At least continue to watch for Karen Gillan!

Hmmm, so is she River Song or not? Being Moffat I kinda assume that she would be, but there's the fact that Smith looks even younger than Tennant

Looks absolutely nothing like him, if we're being honest.

And, by chance, Ice...were you the one that started the whole "Daniel Craig Is Not Bond" campaign a few years back? You seem like the sort... :P

The set report guy (Scooty) from GB has just twittered that, "Doctor Who filming in Fonmon Quarry. Looks to be night shoot, but can't be 100% sure. Casts doubt on alleged Forest of Dean shoot."

"To add, no good vantage point. Explosions of sorts are expected though."

But he won't equal Tennant ever ;)

I will try to stay positive though:
