I think you can definitely master it by just playing around with it. I've never had any lessons or anything, and I got the hang of it in about a week.

I learnt it from scratch to a professional standard in 6 months without any books, tutorials, or the like - it's just like any other software package, the more you use it, the quicker you get. Also, artistic ability is by no means a requirement to become proficient (thank goodness).It took my 6 hours to do my first piece of paid work (which was also the first time I'd used the software at all!) - nowadays (7 years on) I reckon the same piece of work would take me 20 minutes.
Anyway, my offer still stands to anyone struggling - happy to help through PM's (though I draw the line (pardon the pun) at actually doing the work myself).
